Elizabeth was at a store that had decided to survey customers. She thought they were asking her how long she had been in Sweden. She answered “one year.” The clerks began laughing. Then she realized they were asking how long she had been in the store shopping. After answering all the questions in Swedish she had well-earned her free candybar.
That reminded me of another language story. While learning Japanese, a missionary visited the proud new parents of a little baby boy. As you know, it is difficult for a man to say anything encouraging about a newborn baby, but he did his best to say, “What a beautiful baby” in Japanese. But what he actually said was, “What an ugly baby!”
