O Sacred Head Now Wounded

O sacred Head now wounded
With grief and shame weighed down
Now scornfully surrounded
With thorns Thine only crown
How pale Thou art with anguish
With sore abuse and scorn
How does that visage languish
Which once was bright as morn

O Lord of life and glory
What bliss till now was Thine
I read the wondrous story
I joy to call Thee mine
What Thou my Lord hast suffered
Was all for sinners gain
Mine, mine, was the transgression
But Thine the deadly pain

I have always loved that song. There are 3 United Methodist Churches very close to where my wife and I live. One Saturday morning, I was heading out the door to go pick something up at the store. As I was walking to my car, the chimes in the tower of the U of M church on Bethel Rd were playing “Alas, And Did My Saviour Bleed” (not the version with “At the Cross” as a refrain).

Several years ago, “O Sacred Head Now Wounded” was being played at North Broadway U of M, and “Christ the Lord is Risen Today” was playing at Maple Grove U of M at the corner of High and Henderson. Too bad TRUTH is not preached at these churches! If there is TRUTH being preached, it most certainly is watered down!
