ELCA misses the point

It doesn’t take long for a believer to understand what God thinks about homosexuality when he reads the Bible.* Sadly, more and more denominations are being infiltrated with an unbiblical message of tolerance for such evil. In a recent USA Today article, it was reported that the ELCA voted 10-2 to remove a homosexual pastor from its clergy roster. While at first glance that may seem to be a positive step, a closer look reveals that this was a mere formality.

According to the article, “the ELCA, which has 4.9 million members, allows openly gay clergy, but only if they are celibate.” It also indicated that “the 12-member disciplinary committee said they felt the church rule left them no choice but to defrock Schmeling, effective Aug. 15. But the committee also wrote that, if not bound by the rule, it ‘would find almost unanimously that Pastor Schmeling is not engaged in conduct that is incompatible with the ministerial office’ and would order no discipline.”

I know very little about the ELCA, but am left scratching my head over this one. Instead of speaking out against the outright sinfulness of his lifestyle, they simply dismiss him on a technicality. How sad that tolerance and compassion have been distorted so much that sin can no longer be defined. And even worse is the fact that the leadership is leading those under its care in the same direction.

The ELCA is the “Evangelical Lutheran Church in America” which is liberal in the extreme. The ELCA should not to be confused with the LCMS (Lutheran Church Missouri Synod), or WELS (Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod). Both the LCMS and the WELS churches do not have fellowship with the ELCA.

Some other issues with the ELCA: it was forefront in the signing of the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification (JDDC) with the RCC, and it is a leading member of the Lutheran World Federation which dialogues with the RCC (the foundation of the JDDC).

Stay away from the ELCA. It flaunts its liberalism, and harms the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
