In a recent article, Mark Tooley explores the rise of “fundamentalism” in historic Riverside Church in New York. You may remember that Riverside was built by Rockefeller in the early 1900’s and that the church was pastored by Henry Emerson Fosdick. In “Fundamentalism” Invades Manhattan, Tooley tells the story of Riverside’s most recent pastor who resigned after being charged that he was preaching that Jesus is the only way to salvation.
Reading the article gave me more insight into the history of liberalism in the early 20th century. In that sense, I found the article to be of interest. Sadly, though, the article (and the comments that followed) points out the hold liberalism still has on some Americans.
