Trenton’s Bible Study — Ephesians 4:20-24

After all that he had explained about God’s work in their lives, Paul wanted the Ephesians believers to stop acting like people who had not been changed by God.

Read Ephesians 4:20-24

The unbelieving Gentiles whom Paul had described did not know the Lord. They were still walking in darkness, ignorant, calloused, and living sensual lives. But this is not what the Ephesians had learned about the Lord Jesus Christ. They had heard about him the first time and had been taught about him after they believed. Remember what Jesus said? Truth is found only in Jesus (John 14:6) and the Ephesian believers had found it in him. But what had they learned? They learned that a sinner who is born again, experiences three things. First, a born again Christian sets aside his old self. That’s the old way of living that is corrupted by the lusts of deceit. People who have not been born again are deceived into thinking they will be satisfied with what they desire. But they never are. Secondly, a born again Christian has a renewed mind. God changes his mind to think differently about life. Instead of seeking what will please him, he seeks what pleases God. Thirdly, a born again Christian puts on the new self. When a sinner turns from his sin and believes Jesus, God makes him a new person on the inside (2 Cor. 5:17). When a new believer hears the truth, God creates a new person inside of him. You still look the same on the outside, but you think and act differently because he makes you righteous and holy for him.
